The Genius of Beautiful Buildings

The Genius of Beautiful Buildings
Film presentation on the work of Gaudi and Steiner
Kindlehill Eurythmy Hall
Wentworth Falls Blue Mountains NSW

A special film presentation and talk on divine and pure building design features the work of two pioneering architects of the 19th/20th Century – Antoni Gaudi and Rudolf Steiner.

THE GENIUS OF BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS is a rare film presentation featuring the award-winning “Liquid Stone – Unlocking Gaudi’s Secrets” supported by the short film “Sacred Space-The First Goethenaum” with an opening lecture by leading Anthroposophist Alan Whitehead.

The film event and introductory talk will show how important aesthetics, harmony, space and beauty are in our surrounding edifices, and how these tangibly effect us as human beings in health, nature and outlook, even reducing crime.

The screenings will be hosted in the remarkable Eurythmy Hall at Kindlehill School for Rudolf Steiner Education in Wentworth Falls.  The Hall was designed on the spiritual and holistic principles of Rudolf Steiner, with organic shapes and sculptural deco, and built with the use of recycled natural materials using ancient European building techniques. The building in itself is a living example of how architecture can directly effect the happiness and health of those who interact with beautiful spaces, that once constructed, they are of enormous cultural value that span the ages.

“Liquid Stone – Unlocking Gaudi’s Secrets”: The Sagrada Familia Church in Barcelona, Spain was Antoni Gaudi’s most ambitious creation. Begun in the 19th Century, it is still under construction today. Gaudi spent 43 years of his life working on the church and when he realised it would not be completed within in his lifetime, he left intricate design models encoded with an ingenious geometrical system that would enable future generations to complete it.  The challenge to complete the Sagrada Familia Church, according to Gaudi’s vision, is revealed by the architects and artisans who have spent years of their lives immersed in unlocking the secrets of Gaudi’s ‘Liquid Stone’.
Writer & Director:  Polly Watkins  Producers: Beth Frey (Circe Films) & James Frankham (Splice Ltd)  Made with the support of the Construction Board of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona Spain.  Film Victoria, TV New Zealand, Screen Australia, YLE teema, Circe Films & Splice. Dur:  52min

“Sacred Space - The First Goetheanum”: A remarkable building designed by Rudolf Steiner in Dornach Switzerland.  Formed of two intersecting domes never before attempted in construction, and larger than the dome of St Peters, it’s completion drew visitors and admiration from experts the world over.  Built for the purpose of Eurythmy performance and Anthroposophical study, it was burnt down by an arsonist in 1922. However detailed records, photographs and design sketches remain.

With the much-loved art deco charm being quickly eroded in the Blue Mountains, and many treasured historical buildings subject to neglect such as St Mary’s Convent, the Hydro Majestic and the Savoy Theatre, the question stands as to what value we place on our remaining historical and beautiful buildings.

Anna Kannava Retrospective

Unique Films by Anna Kannava showcase in a Retrospective
Cinema Nova
380 Lygon St, Carlton Vic

Melbourne independent filmmaker, artist and writer Anna Kannava died on 5 May 2011 at 51. Anna was born in Cyprus in 1959, and migrated to Australia in 1974.  Throughout her life and work she kept a binding physical, cultural and creative connection to her homeland. Anna completed a number of highly personal and poetic films, including the two feature films Dreams For Life (2005) and Kissing Paris (2009), along with the acclaimed documentaries The Butler (1997) and Ten Years After, Ten Years Older (1986).

The Anna Kannava Retrospective showcases these films as well as four experimental award-winning and applauded short films that have not been publicly screened for over twenty years: Vanilla Essence (1989), Tight Rope Water (1982), The Wedding of Venus (1981) and You Can Hav'er (1980).  Her work has been praised and valued by many film professionals, cinefiles and critics including Margaret Pomeranz (At the Movies), Adrian Martin (The Age), Evan Williams (The Weekend Australian), Margaret Throsby (Radio National) and Andrew L. Urban (Urban Cinefile).

For all who knew her or knew of her work, she touched the earth gracefully with a self-assured European aesthetic and a passion for literary and visual beauty leaving a conspicuous mark on both the Australian and European cinematic landscapes.  Her writing was just as revered, with fellow writers in utter praise of her work, including AFI award-winning screenwriter Alison Tilson who attests that her actual screenplays are esteemed literary works in themselves. During her last years Anna wrote two commissioned (and as yet unpublished) novels that will be on the bookshelves from 2012.

After Anna’s passing Senior Lecturer Simon Wilmot of the Faculty of Arts, Deakin University instigated an Arts Scholarship in her name to assist struggling migrant women to pursue their creative dreams.  The Retrospective Tour is for the purposes of supporting this scholarship.

For any filmgoer or inquisitor of culture, the Anna Kannava Retrospective is not to be missed.

Film Presentation and French Supper with the Filmmaker Jane Oehr

A Q&A Screening was held with filmmaker Jane Oehr, who presented her film "Tea with Madame Clos" in Mount Victoria in 2010.  Interviewed by Kevin Lucas on her filmmaking style and the process of her documentation of her subject Madame Clos over several years, the capacity audience afterwards accompanied her to a French Supper hosted at the Victoria and Albert's restaurant "Bertie’s"

Tea with Madame Clos is set in rural France about the oldest woman in her village, and directed by Australian filmmaker Jane Oehr. The film is a rare look at a Traditional French Woman whose life spanned most of the 20th Century – it has an unpredictable and startling end.  For lovers of French Culture, this is not a film to miss, with all the intricacies of village existence, language and the urbanity of the French way of life.  It beautifully portrays an uncommon character from a generation fast disappearing.
